Long Island Man Indicted In Ex-Girlfriend’s Death: DA
Wayne Chambers stabbed Sandra McIntosh 25 times, fled to the Hudson Valley, and changed his phone to evade capture, authorities said.
RIVERSIDE, NY — The Long Island man accused of stabbing his 46-year-old ex-girlfriend to death in Holtsville last month has been indicted, Suffolk County District Attorney Timothy Sini’s office said Wednesday.
Wayne Chambers, 49, of Medford, was charged with second-degree murder. He was remanded to the Suffolk County Correctional Facility without bail.
Prosecutors said Chambers used Sandra McIntosh’s white Lexus SUV to pick her up from her job as a registered nurse at Stony Brook University Hospital Medical Center, and residents on Woodland Avenue in Holtsville heard McIntosh calling for help and saw Chambers “physically assaulting her in the street next to her car” at about 8 p.m., Sini said.

Chambers then left the scene, and a resident called 911 to get help for McIntosh, according to prosecutors. McIntosh, a Medford resident, was found stabbed 25 times and transported to the hospital where she had worked and was pronounced dead, prosecutors said.
Chambers is believed to have driven to the Bronx, where he abandoned McIntosh’s Lexus, and fled to Newburgh, according to prosecutors. He also turned off his cell phone and obtained a new cell phone number to evade detection by law enforcement, prosecutors said.

Sini said the attack as a brutal, tragic murder that took the life of someone who had dedicated her life to caring for others.
“After allegedly stabbing the victim to death, the defendant took several steps to try to avoid being caught, including dumping the victim’s car, changing his phone number, and attempting to hide out at a motel,” he said. “He was ultimately apprehended thanks to a multi-agency effort, and we will seek justice for the victim.”
Chambers was found at a motel in Newburgh on July 30 and arrested by Homicide Squad detectives and members of the Newburgh Police Department, New York State Police, and U.S. Marshals.
Chambers' attorney, Richard Stafford of Bohemia, could not be immediately reached for comment. He is due back in court on Sept. 21.
Chambers faces up to 25 years to life in prison if convicted.
