Pedestrian Fatally Struck by Car in Bellport

A 28-year-old Bellport man was killed when he was struck by a car in Bellport Saturday night, police said.

According to police, a 24-year-old East Patchogue man was driving a 2007 Volkswagen Rabbit westbound on Montauk Highway when his vehicle struck Juan Mejia, who was attempting to cross Montauk Highway, west of Bellport Avenue, at 8:11 p.m.

Mejia was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Volkswagen was not injured.

The vehicle was impounded for a safety check and the investigation is continuing. Detectives are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact the Fifth Squad at 631-854-8552 or call anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
