Police ID Woman Killed, Child Seriously Hurt In Long Island Crash
The mother and 7-year-old girl were struck by a car Saturday evening. The child remains in critical condition.

A 7-year-old girl remains in critical condition a day after a crash on Long Island took the life of her mother.
Myshirra High-Cortes, 31, and her daughter, Jayla Cortes, were struck by a car on Horseblock Road, west of Yaphank Avenue, in Yaphank around 5:05 p.m. Saturday. Suffolk Police say they had stepped into the roadway when they were hit by a 2016 Hyundai Elantra that was traveling eastbound on Horseblock Road.
High-Cortes, of Brentwood, was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center in East Patchogue where she was pronounced dead. Jayla was taken to the same hospital before being transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital where she remains critical condition.

The driver of the Hyundai, a 60-year-old Shirley woman, was not injured. The vehicle was impounded for a safety check. No criminal charges have been filed.
