1. BUNDLE UP & get outside! Even though it's winter, embrace the season! We still need the sun. Take a brisk walk, build a snowman, have a snowball fight, go skiing or ice skating; you get the idea :)
2. GET SOME REST! It's hard to juggle our busy lives but aim for 7-8 hours of sleep. Try not to oversleep, it can actually make you more tired. A short 20-30 nap can re-energize you midday.
3. AVOID BINGE DRINKING. Yes, I know it's hard with the holidays, boredom etc.... but alcohol is a depressant. Moderation!
4. TREAT YOURSELF! It's okay to have a piece of cake - just not the whole cake. If you need it, go for it BUT enjoy it! Give yourself 5 minutes to sit down, taste it and don't beat yourself up. It will decrease the urge to go back for more.
5. RELAX! Again, even if you can only find 5 minutes. Relaxation alleviates stress. Read a magazine, take a bath, sit in a quiet room etc.
Oh & yes... you deserve it!
6. As always, AVOID refined & processed foods like sugar, white bread and rice. It causes mood swings, cravings and all that bad stuff. Your body responds to eating with the seasons (pomegranates, dark leafy greens, potatoes, winter squash & citrus to name a few).
7. RESOLUTIONS...hmmm - I don't love them. So much pressure!!! Do your best every day. Some days are easier than others. Try to be consistent, it's a good baby step.
8. BUDDY SYSTEM - winter can be so isolating. There's nothing like the support of great friends. Try & make it something active. As long as you're with friends, anything can be fun - even exercise
9. FOOD JOURNAL - we feel trapped indoors anyway. Pick up a journal and write down everything you eat. STOP! Not for guilt, judgement or pressure. It's a simple way to cut calories. Coffee with cream & sugar, condiments, portions etc.. There's 3500 calories in a pound. If you shave off 500 a day, you can lose a pound a week! Journaling will show you easy calories to omit.
10. You know it's coming... the biggest KELLYFITNESS rule - weight or resistance training! Great to burn calories, tighten & tone. You can do tons of stuff at home like; jumping rope, squats, lunges, push-ups - or just blast the music & jump around....winter can make us feel a little crazy anyway, why not burn some calories. I love multi-tasking.
GOOD LUCK!! XOXO
