4 Facing Weapon, Drug Charges From Traffic Stop: Nassau Police

Police say officers pulled the car over and found a loaded handgun inside, along with drugs.

Four people are facing weapon and drug charges after police say officers pulled over their car during a traffic stop in Roosevelt on Sunday.

According to police, officers were on a routine patrol in Roosevelt at 2:10 p.m. when they saw a 2002 Chevrolet Impala committing traffic violations. The officers pulled the car over at the intersection of Washington Avenue and Rose Avenue. Police say that the officers smelled marijuana coming from the car as they approached.

In addition to drugs, police say the officers found a loaded handgun in the car. All four occupants were arrested.

Rhyeam Atkinson, 39, of Duryea Place, Hempstead, was charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon: firearm/knife, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon: convicted felony and second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana.

Julia Lopez, 45, of Elizabeth Court, Hempstead, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon: loaded firearm outside home, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon: firearm/knife, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon and third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Cholena Callaway, 34, of Edna Court, Baldwin, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon: loaded firearm outside home, seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance and second-degree unlawful possession of marijuana.

Jeffrey Appiagyei, 38, of Crowell Street, Hempstead, was charged with criminal possession of a firearm, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree criminal impersonation, arrest without warrant: fugitive from justice and numerous vehicle and traffic violations.

All four were arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Monday.
