MERRICK, NY — A 4-year-old child is in critical condition at a hospital Thursday after they were trapped in a Nissan Sentra after an accident on the Southern State Parkway Wednesday afternoon, police said.
New York State police announced Thursday that the troopers had responded to the SSP’s westbound side near exit 20 for the crash, finding upon arrival that a 2006 Nissan Sentra had struck trees on the side of the road.

Police did not identify the driver or the child Thursday, and did not announce any arrests or charges stemming from the crash. Wednesday afternoon, the investigation closed all lanes on the westbound side of the parkway from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., police said.
