📰 News we're reading

• Merrick's Martin Valk takes helm of N.Y. Kiwanis (liherald.com) — Merrick resident Martin E. Valk has just begun his term as governor of the New York District of Kiwanis, bringing decades of service with the Kiwanis Club of Merrick to a statewide role. He and his wife are launching projects to recycle unused sports equipment and expand Little Libraries, and locals are invited to get involved through the Merrick Kiwanis club.

• Chip City closes all locations, including stores in Oceanside and Merrick (liherald.com) — Merrick residents have lost a popular dessert stop after Chip City abruptly closed all of its cookie shops, including the Merrick and Oceanside locations, on Oct. 2. The shutdown follows rapid expansion, internal financial disputes and an unresolved lawsuit involving the company's co-founder, leaving locals without the chain's oversized cookies and little clarity about what went wrong.
