The lacrosse players with True Blue Lacrosse, a Long Island travel team based in Merrick that plays in tournaments along the East Coast, are playing for a cause this summer.
They are collecting pledges for every goal they score for the entire season in the hope of raising funds for the Cancer Center for Kids at Winthrop Hospital.
Seventh-grade lacrosse player and Merrick resident, Jack Silverman, was instrumental in organizing the fundraising effort and selecting the Cancer Center for Kids as the beneficiary after a friend of the organization was diagnosed with cancer.

Along with securing pledges to raise funds, the student athletes also videotaped their efforts and submitted that to the Long Island Sports Challenge, a contest created by Team Up 4 Community and Bethpage Federal Credit Union to encourage young athletes to give back to their community.
Visitors to the web site (www.TeamUp4Community.org ) can vote between August 2 and 6 on which video/community service project they find the most compelling.
