Here are the top five stories today in Merrick:
- A suspect remains at large after an armed robbery outside a home in Levittown on February 16, police said. A 52-year-old woman was arriving at her home when a person unknown to her approached and demanded money. He then fled south on Ridge Lane on foot with the woman's pocketbook. - The mask issue seems to have brought parents and teachers to loggerheads in Wantagh, as revealed at a contentious Board of Education meeting on February 10. Nearly two dozen parents spoke in opposition to the in-school mask mandate at that event. Board members defended the enforcement of the mandate, citing the possibility of losing state funding if they failed to comply. (liherald)
- A former Rockville Centre teacher who established the first ESL program on Long Island died on January 31. Alma Santana Galati, of Baldwin, was 88 when she passed away. Galati spent 32 years teaching in that district, and her fellow educators say they still feel the impact of her work. (liherald.com)
- Nassau Community College is celebrating Black History Month with a theatrical performance of "The Meeting" by Jeff Stetson. Head over to SUNY Nassau Community College's Mainstage Theater to see how a fictional meeting between Martin Luther King, Jr., and Malcolm X plays out.
