Here are the top stories today in Merrick:

  1. A man was taken into custody Thursday evening after attempting to break into a woman’s Arthur Avenue residence in Seaford. After failing to gain entrance, the suspect, Nicholas Logeira, 28, fled on foot. He was confronted by police and injured one officer during his arrest. He was arraigned in District Court on Friday. (Patch)
  2. A Freeport man died Thursday after being struck by a car March 20 on Sunrise Highway near Freeport. Oscar Saquij-Cruz, 49, suffered multiple injuries after being struck by a westbound 2020 Subaru Forrester. The driver, 66, who has not been identified, remained on the scene and has not been charged by police. (Daily Voice)
  3. With gas prices going up every day, the chance to get away is increasingly expensive but it doesn’t have to be. The Long Island regional travel office has put together a list of the top 10 Long Island destinations accessible by rail, bike or other mass transit travel options. This article details the many great outdoor activities, beaches, parks and wineries. (Long Island Business)
  4. Each morning, retired men in Oceanside go into the local Dunkin' Donuts on Lawson Boulevard to talk and collectively solve the world's problems over hot coffee and circular pastries. It isn’t unique to Oceanside, but this group inspired former Today Show producer, Joanne LaMarca, to document the process of forming friendships and male bonding in retirement. The Oceanside group is the first to appear in what will eventually be a documentary series of similar events around the country. (Long Island Herald)
  5. With the cost of everything rising, Nassau county residents could see higher taxes for schools this next year. School taxes are significant in Long Island where they account for 60% of homeowner’s tax bills. Many residents didn’t think these taxes would go up since the districts received federal support during the pandemic, and some homeowners question whether these tax increases are really necessary.
