Bellmore-Merrick Girls Bowling Loses Close One to Plainedge

Despite collecting more total pins, the girls dropped two of three games to lose by a single point against Plainedge.

The Bellmore-Merrick girls bowling team started off strong against Plainedge on Monday afternoon, but struggled in the final two games to drop the match 6-5.

Calhoun freshman Kayla Cappuzzo led the team in a hard-fought match that came down to the wire, but the shaky finish hindered Bellmore-Merrick. Although they collected more total pins, 1,904-1,855, Plainedge won two of the three games to collect the win.

“We didn’t bowl our best today and didn’t fill the frames we needed to,” head coach Keri Cinelli said. “They had one girl who bowled outstanding, getting two 200 games. The girls just need to step up their game.”

Cappuzzo posted her team's high-score for the day in the opening round with a 243. Mepham senior Laura Rooney bowled a 172 to bolster the strong first game. Mepham senior Victoria Sorrentino and Calhoun senior Kate Brown added a 144 and 136, respectively to round out the scoring. Bellmore-Merrick won the game in dominant fashion 695-529.

However, the second game proved to be the breaking point for the team. Calhoun senior Nicole Celauro came in to bowl a 183, followed by Cappuzzo with a 142. Brown struggled to find her line as she posted a 130, followed by Rooney with a 128. Plainedge took the second game 650-583.

Celauro continued her solid performance in her second round of the day, posting a 173. Cappuzzo, playing in all three games for the first time this season, added a 169. Sorrentino came back in to contribute with a 147, followed by Rooney with a 137. Plainedge topped Bellmore-Merrick by 50 pins to take the third and final game, 676-626.

“We just have to close our frames a little bit more, but overall I think we did well for ourselves,” Celauro said. “It was just frustrating when you hit the pocket and roll a good ball and just not get a strike.”

Bellmore-Merrick dropped to 3-2 as they continue to fight tough to keep pace with first-place Levittown Division as the positioning round approaches this week.

“We are going to go over some things at practice tomorrow and let this slide off our backs and get the points back in the next round,” Cinelli said.
