Here are the top stories today in Merrick:
- There's some nasty weather in store for the area, according to the National Weather Service. A 'Bomb Cyclone' is gearing up to hit Long Island, set to arrive Saturday. Expect heavy rains and high winds over the weekend. (Patch)
- In an effort to crack down on illegal guns, the Nassau County DA has created a Firearms Suppression and Intelligence Unit. The new group will seek to discover the source of the influx of illegal guns, which authorities say have nearly doubled in the last year. The unit was up and running beginning Thursday, March 10. (News 12 Connecticut)
- The Breakfast Club, a popular brunch spot that closed in January, has officially been replaced. Ugly Duckling opened its doors in the space on South Park Avenue on March 3. The eatery serves a fusion menu that includes Reuben egg rolls and pulled duck nachos as well as American staples like macaroni and cheese and wings. (Patch)
- Local firefighters and police received a special treat in recognition of their service on March 4. Kids For Kops shared cupcakes and hot cocoa at a fundraiser for Project Thank A Cop at a home in Wantagh. See pictures of the event at liherald.com.
- The Nassau County DA is investigating a priest from St. Bernard’s Church in Levittown for possible possession of child pornography, reports Mike Smollins. The person under investigation, Joseph Nohs, is not permitted to serve as a priest while the probe is underway. (liherald.com)
