The Tooth Fairy

The Tooth Fairy - What is the Tooth Fairy leaving these days? As a first-time Mom and someone who is in her 40s, I really needed to get to the root of the answer.

The day is finally here for my son Gavin, (7 years, 4 months), who lost his first tooth.

We were so excited as the tooth had been wiggling for weeks and the dentist said the permanent teeth are on their way.

The question then was, "what is the Tooth Fairy leaving these days?"

Back in the 70's it ranged from 25 cents to $2. These days, and especially for the first tooth, it is suppose to be the age of the child.

Is the Tooth Fairy really that generous for a tooth that is so small? And you wonder what happens to all those teeth? Do they get saved or thrown out?

Then I got to thinking, how many teeth will Gavin lose? A total of 20 teeth will come out -- eight premolars, eight incisors and four canines. That means the Tooth Fairy is in for $100 to $140-plus. Wow!

The experience of losing a first tooth is one to be remembered. Not only by what the Tooth Fairy brought, but the excitement of new things to come.

Gavin received $5 from the Tooth Fairy and a present from Mom and Dad for his first tooth.
