The newest addition to the Merrick fitness scene is Core Ryder, an intense spin cycle studio owned and operated by Melissa Buonomo.
Already the owner of Sisters Pilates, Buonomo felt that an intense cardiovascular element was missing from the otherwise excellent foundation of physical fitness that pilates offered, and as a result, opened Core Ryder in the adjacent store just four months ago.
Buonomo recently spoke to Patch about running a local business and making Merokeans sweat.

Tell us about the hard-hitting exercise programs you offer at Core Ryder.
Core Ryder is a spinning studio. What sets Core Ryder apart from other spinning studios are a few things. First of all, we have 26 RealRyders, which are 'unstationary' stationary bicycles. They are actually on an articulating frame, which can bend and move so it gives a much more dynamic ride than an average stationary bike. You’re also engaging your core muscles much more when you’re using it, so you actually burn more calories than you normally would because of the engagement of those additional upper-body/core muscles.

Do members have to enter into long-term contracts?
Not at all. Core Ryder is pay-as-you-go, so you’re not locked into contracts. Also, there’s 26 bicycles and there’s no over-booking. There are classes seven days per week and we have great instructors.
What got you into the fitness field and why open a spinning studio after already establishing a successful pilates studio?
I’m a master trainer and I recognized that with pilates, although there is a cardio element, it’s much more of a toning workout and I felt that it missing an intense cardio element. I already love to cycle and the whole idea of spinning, because no other 50-minute workout gives you the kind of calorie burn, the amount of sweat, that spinning does, especially with out patented RealRyder bikes. I just wanted to offer people an intense cardio workout.
What do you like best about owning and operating a business in the Merrick community?
I love the enthusiasm of the people who live in Merrick. They love to stay fit and be on the cutting edge of what's new and revolutionary in the fitness world. The bikes at Core Ryder are new to Long Island and I knew the people in Merrick would love the challenge.
