Calhoun and Kennedy Wrestlers on Top at County Championships

Maldarelli and Chiaffitella claim titles for Calhoun; Kennedy's Person and Maher also place in county wrestling championships.

Mac Maldarelli and Joe Chiaffitella had one last chance to take home a Nassau County wrestling championship Sunday.

And a year after both of the Calhoun High School seniors went down in the championship finals, they each claimed victory at Hofstra University yesterday.

Maldarelli defeated Plainedge's Dan Spurgeon, 7-2, in the 145-pound bracket while Chiaffitella nipped Long Beach's Nick Khoury by a 4-3 decision in the 135-pound contest.

Kennedy High's Robert Person captured a third place finish in the 96-pound bracket.  Person lost to Long Beach's Krishnad Sewkumar in the semi-finals, but then dominated Plainedge's Connor Sullivan, 6-0, in the consolation round to claim third.
