Calhoun Educator Honored As Distinguished Teacher

MERRICK, NY - From Bellmore-Merrick Central School District: Jason Boland, an English teacher at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in the Bellmore-Merrick Central School District, was recently recognized as a distinguished teacher by the Harvard Club of Long Island.

Julia Losner, Calhoun grad and current Harvard University student, nominated Boland for the award.

“For a student to recognize you after they graduate is quite an honor,” said board trustee Wendy Garguilo at the April 9 meeting where Boland was recognized.

A graduate of Calhoun himself, Boland began his educational career at Merrick Avenue Middle School, and then after three years, he continued on to Calhoun High School, where he has been since. He has taught students of all grades, including 11th grade AP English Language.

A former Herald reporter and editor, Boland has functioned as the Hoofbeats adviser for the last 12 years. He has been invited to speak at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s annual convention, presenting to more than 200 other advisers and journalism students about, “reinventing your school newspaper.”

An all-year contributor to the Bellmore-Merrick school community, Boland has also functioned as the girls varsity softball coach for the past 15 years and a summer school teacher for the past 20 years.
