Colts Baseball Wins County Title With Improbable Rally Against MacArthur

Calhoun baseball rallied from a 7-0 deficit this evening to defeat MacArthur 8-7 and clinch the Class AA county title.

The Calhoun High School baseball team came back from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the top-ranked MacArthur Generals this evening at Farmingdale State College, 8-7, to win the Class AA county championship.

After having trouble with Generals' starter Josh Barry through the first five innings, Calhoun battled, and the team accomplished the improbable.

The Colts combined patience with peskiness to come back. After getting two on with a walk and a hit by pitch in the sixth, Frank Trimarco singled in a run.

Then Alex Ras reached on a dropped fly ball. Tom Viverito grounded into a fielder's choice to score a run as well to make the score 7-2. Zach Goldstein singled in another, and then John Eyerman flew out. Dan Sullivan was plunked to load the bases, and then Ryan Kass had a long term at bat before singling in a pair.

Jake Thomas was pitched around, and then Robbie Rosen popped a ball into the Bermuda Triangle of center field that glanced off the outfielder's glove for a three-run double to give the Colts a 8-7 lead.

Joey Saladino, who pitched the final three innings in relief, retired the Generals in order in the seventh.

"I'm so proud of these kids," Calhoun coach Joe Correa said. "They just never give up."
