After initially proposing to remove Legis. Dave Denenberg's, D-Merrick, home from his longtime district, Nassau County Republicans backed off after Legis. Denise Ford refused to vote for new legislative lines on Monday, according to Newsday.
The proposal would have put part of Merrick, including Denenberg's home, into the 5th legislative district, which is represented by Joseph Scannell.

"To move Dave out of his district in this way was a little unfair," Ford told Newsday. "I raised concerns and hopefully they'll put Dave back in his district."
If the proposal had gone through, Denenberg would have had to relocate in order to run for his position once again. Republicans proposed an amended map Tuesday that kept Denenberg in the 19th legislative district.

Denenberg called the decision to restore his district a "welcome development." He said he and Ford "have had a close working relationship and we represent similar districts. Both of us have taken tough, independent votes. So, while I appreciate her decision, it was not entirely unexpected."
"The community of Merrick and Bellmore overwhelmingly selected a representative," Merrick resident Susan Joffe told Newsday. "To be told that his block has suddenly moved to another district nullifies the vote. It disenfranchises the community."
