Dignitaries, Neighbors Gather At Menorah Lighting In Merrick

Potato pancakes and jelly donuts are given to the crowd.

MERRICK, NY — Dozens of people braved the cold weather to usher in the start of Chanukah.

The menorah lighting, organized by the Chabad of Merrick-Bellmore-Wantagh, was lit, commemorating the first night of the holiday.

Nassau County Executive-elect Bruce Blakeman helped Rabbi Shimon Kramer light the 12-foot menorah at the Merrick LIRR on Sunday night.

Children from Hebrew School participated in entertainment, while traditional potato latkes (pancakes) and jelly donuts were served to the crowd. Chanukah candles were also provided.

Festivities began with a car parade from the Chabad location in Merrick to the train station.
