Domestic Dispute Escalates Into Officer Getting Injured: Police

MERRICK, NY — A domestic dispute in Merrick spilled over to an officer getting injured. It happened Friday just before 11 p.m. when officers responded to a 911 call for a disturbance at a home on Hedge Lane.

Isaiah Thorne, 20, was involved in a verbal altercation with Leona Abdylji, 18, authorities said.

As police attempted to de-escalate the situation, Thorne made contact with an officer. Thorne became violent and combative as officers attempted to place him in custody. One officer got injured, police said.

Abdylji initially pushed officers and tried to halt Thorne's arrest, but she was ultimately placed under arrest without further incident, authorities said.

The officer and Thorne were brought to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Thorne is charged with second-degree assault. They were both expected to be arraigned on Saturday. Abdylji faces charges of second-degree obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest.
