Anne Tyler's novel provides a fascinating look at cultural differences, communication breakdowns and what it means to be a family.
Tyler presents two microcosms of 21st century American society as seen from the different perspectives of those born here and those still struggling to fit in.
A chance airport encounter between two families-the Donaldsons and the Iranian-born Yazdans-as both couples await the arrival of an adopted daughter from Korea, prompts a look at what it is like to be viewed as "foreign" in America both before and after 9/11. Tyler's keen perceptiveness in exploring relationships, within and between families across the cultural spectrum, is showcased as she follows the lives of the families after their new daughters arrive.
