Since the program's inception, it has grown in popularity for its comprehensive approach and impact on those who attend. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of injury and death among teenagers. The risk for motor vehicle crashes is higher for 16 to 19 year old than any other age group. Annually, 5,000 teens are killed and 300,000 are injured in auto crashes.
Driving in the Safe Lane was launched in 2005 by the Community Parent Center in response to the growing problem of unsafe teen driving. "Our goal is to save young lives through education and awareness. Our message is that driving is a privilege and comes with great responsibility," said Wendy Tepfer, Executive Director of the Community Parent Center.
