The Merrick Jewish Centre Adult Education Committee announces it will present a workshop on preventing bullying. The workshop, "How to Stop the Bullying," is the second in the Centre's three-part adult education program aimed at making things better for the young generation. The third installment, "Child and Teen Suicide Prevention," will be presented later this spring.
The anti-bullying program will explore topics including:
- what to do if your child is being bullied
- what to do if your child is the bully
- how we can work together to stop the bullying altogether
Presenters will be Merrick Jewish Centre members and experts Dr. Matthew Pulewitz and Lyle Cogen.

Dr. Pulewitz is a clinical psychologist currently in private practice, who specializes in therapies for children, adolescents and families. Bullying has become a major concern of many of his patients. During his presentation, he will provide an overview of the problem, present advice for parents who are concerned about their children being bullied-- or who are doing the bullying -- discuss what children (and parents) should do if they are the victims of bullying, and explain how parents can work with the school if bullying becomes an issue.
Ms. Cogen has created theater productions, written songs, presented student workshops and implemented teacher/staff professional development-- all on the subject of bullying and relational aggression. She will be taking audience members on a journey during which they will explore creative ways that drama and music can be used to teach children in school and at home about bullying. Her bullying prevention programs are highly acclaimed and considered some of the most effective ones available.
