An open meeting to meet and greet author Heather Worthington, who has just had a new book published about Merrick's own ROXEY the DOG, will be held at the Merrick Library on Wednesday, September 15th, at 7 pm.
The session is co-sponsored by the Merrick Library and the Historical Society of the Merricks. Author Worthington will be there to sign the book which may be purchased at that session. She assures us that she has a presentation especially prepared for Merrick, outlining the interesting history behind the publishing of the book as well as a portion of her presentation which the youngsters will enjoy.
So this is a meeting for all the ages in our community. The book is called MILES OF SMILES and the story's hero, ROXEY THE DOG, travels the Long Island Rail Road as a passenger and even winds up meeting the President of the United States - Long Island's own Teddy Roosevelt. Ms. Worthington came to Merrick a few years ago and was squired around to our various spots of interest by Historical Society President Lawrence Garfinkel.

Among the places that interested her was the memorial just south of the Merrick Railroad Station that was erected to honor ROXEY, THE RAILROAD DOG, who as a resident of our town for a while hopped aboard the trains there for rides to Pennsylvania Station. That day's tour eventually turned into this marvelously illustrated story.
