Former Nassau Officer, Who Retired Due To ALS, Honored By County

NORTH MERRICK, NY — A retired Nassau County Police Officer put on his uniform on Monday for the first time since he had to step away due to ALS five months ago, Newsday said.

Wayne Resnick, 52, of North Merrick, was diagnosed with the debilitating illness, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

A 28-year veteran of Nassau law enforcement, Resnick started his career as a 911 dispatcher in 1994, and spent 16 years as an officer, Newsday said.

Resnick was honored by the Nassau County Legislature as the "Top Cop" for December.

"He's always done anything possible to help others," Nassau PBA President Thomas Shevlin said.

Now, as Resnick deals with the serious consequences, "We are all here to support him and his family during his very difficult time," Shevlin said.
