Witness: Driver Causes Crash After Running Red Light on Sunrise Highway

Four people were injured and the road was closed eastbound Tuesday afternoon because of the accident.

Four people were taken to area hospitals on Tuesday afternoon when a truck plowed into a sedan and then continued to hit other vehicles, stopping after it slammed into a pole.

Crystal Weeks, a witness to the accident, said that she had been previously driving next to the truck and that the operator was driving erratically.

"At that point, I decided to pull back and stay away from him," she said.

But then, Weeks said she saw the vehicle hit a white car after running a red light.

"I don't even know which direction the car was going. The truck just hit her and it spun around and I guess [the truck] hit her so hard that he just kept going. He hit all of the cars here (the cars were parked alongside Sunrise Highway in front of the gas station) and a Jeep was pushed up on top of a car," she told Patch at the scene.

Weeks said that the Merrick Fire Department had to remove the door of the white sedan and that the female driver, "didn't look like she was in great shape."

There were two additional passengers in the sedan and the driver of the truck was also taken to the hospital, Weeks said.

The accident happened at about 1:05 p.m. at the intersection of Sunrise Highway and Merrick Avenue. The road was closed eastbound during rescue and clean-up.
