Here are the top five stories today in Merrick:

  1. A tanker truck carrying fuel hit a pole in Merrick on the morning of Feb. 28, causing a short power outage and road closures. The incident happened just after 5 a.m. at Lansdowne Avenue near Sunrise Highway. Police have not released information about injuries relating (Merrick Patch)
  2. A pedestrian was hospitalized in critical condition in Valley Stream after she was struck by a van. Police say a Ford vehicle hit the woman around 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27, at the intersection of North Central Avenue and Margaret Drive. Authorities have not released the names of the individuals involved. (Daily Voice)
  3. Hear from Long Island African American Chamber of Commerce President Phil Andrews in an interview at the Long Island Press. Andrews has led the Chamber since 2013. Click over to the article to find out his background and lessons he has learned over his years in that role.
  4. The Long Island Volunteer Center hosted a ceremony this month honoring three high school volunteers. The recipients were Charlene Lin of Great Neck High School, Evan Ng of Bayside High School and Valerie Ng of Bronx High School of Science. Each received a President's Volunteer Service Award, considered the White House's most prestigious volunteer award for their work with nonprofits. (LongIsland.com)
