Gun Arrest 7 Months After Weapon Left At SSP Crash Scene: State Cops
State Troopers used DNA to determine that a handgun found in a backpack belonged to William Herring, police say.

NORTH MERRICK, NY — An arrest was made in connection to a three-car crash on the Southern State Parkway that took place in May.
State Police have arrested and charged William Herring, 28, after an investigation showed that a black backpack on the shoulder by Exit 22N had a loaded .25 caliber handgun belonging to him.
Troopers used DNA to determine that Herring had ownership of the gun, state police said.

Herring has denied ownership of the gun.
He was charged on Friday with second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
