Calhoun prevailed 56-47 to win its third straight on Saturday; showdown with Great Neck South looms.

It's all starting to come together for the Lady Colts.

Led by what coach Dave Radtke calls his offensive 'triple threat,' Calhoun topped visiting East Meadow 56-47 in league play on Saturday.  It was the third straight win for the Colts (3-6), giving them much needed momentum heading into tomorrow's showdown against Great Neck South.

Three heads are better than one, and that applies to the hardwood.  Meghan O' Sullivan led all scorers with 21, and Danielle Losee added 8.

It was the appearance of 'head number three' off the bench that was the key, however.

Senior guard Katie Berghorn added 12, all from three point range, giving Calhoun another weapon opposing defenses must account for going forward.  Radtke said coming off a strong season a year ago, he's been waiting for Berghorn to emerge this year.

"[Katie's] been struggling a little bit, but she came out today, and if she can keep on a roll, her and Danielle are a tough tandem together," Radtke said.  "You can't guard both of them, you have to leave somebody open."

Early on, it was Losee who was open, yet cold.  The sophomore sharpshooter missed her first four shots from downtown.  Enter Berghorn, who hit her first two threes early in the second period, giving her team an 11 point advantage.

"Once you're a shooter, you need to keep shooting," Berghorn said.  "You might have an off game...just keep shooting it, because you'll end up hitting them."

Up by five at the half, Calhoun would see that lead soon vanish.  The Lady Jets' Melissa Cohen (9 points) hit on a reverse layup to tie things at 41, and a Brittany Anghel free throw gave East Meadow (3-6) the lead at the end of three.

Anghel led the Jets with 13, and caught the eye of the Lady Colts, for more reasons than one.

"Some of her screens I thought were illegal," Radtke said.  "She would push off after the screen, it wasn't me who was seeing it, [my players] were complaining about it."

There would be no complaints about Calhoun's fourth quarter effort.  The Lady Colts clamped down on defense, outscoring the Lady Jets 15-5 in the final frame.

O' Sullivan pulled down 8 rebounds on the afternoon, and also showed off her outside game, hitting jumpers from the free throw line, part of an early fourth period run that put the Lady Colts back on top.

"She's deadly from [that spot]," Radtke said of O' Sullivan.  "Teams leave her open, and she knocks them down."

Berghorn capped off her day with her fourth make from beyond the arc midway through the fourth, and it was smooth sailing the rest of the way.

The Lady Colts will need to continue their strong play if they have hopes of knocking off the Conference AA-II leader when they visit Great Neck South (7-1) tomorrow.

"The trust they have in each other," said Radtke when asked what the key to his squad's recent surge has been.  "The unselfishness more than anything...they're so unselfish, they don't care who scores, they just want to win."
