Here are the top five stories in Merrick today:

  1. An Elmont man has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide, reports Kathy Reakes. Ebraheem Chowdhury, age 24, admitted to driving under the influence of alcohol and marijuana and crashing into a tree in the Hudson Valley on August 25, 2020. A passenger was killed as a result of the collision. (Rutherford Daily Voice)
  2. The Nassau County District Attorney reports that a Brooklyn man has been indicted for the shooting of his mother and father on December 25, 2021. The DA alleges that Dino Tomassetti argued with his parents before shooting them around 9:30 AM at their home in Hewlitt. Both parents survived their injuries and have since been released from the hospital. (Press Release Desk)
  3. In lighter news, shelters in the Merrick area offer a wide variety of adoptable pets just in case you're looking for your next fuzzy family member. Pets of the Week include Cassie, Stripes and more. (Merrick Patch)
  4. A three-time "Chopped" champion opened a new food truck in Farmingdale recently. Marc Bynum's Hush Food Truck serves up globally-inspired ramen and hand-held foods in the Stop & Shop parking lot. Queue up to Bynum's cuisine Monday through Friday, noon to 7:00 PM, and click over to the Greater Long Island to hear more of his story.
  5. Town leaders announced $300,000 in grant funding to support the Town of Hempstead’s Shellfish Restoration Program. The funds are earmarked for restoring oyster beds in Jamaica Bay off the coast of Inwood. Oysters can help filter water and reduce the growth of potentially harmful algae. (Town of Hempstead)
