š±Merrick, Bellmore Flood Insurance Hikes Possible + Freeport Gem Show

Here are the top five stories in Merrick today:
- A missing Hempstead mom and her one-year-old son have been found. The woman and her son, who hadn't been seen since April 1, were reportedly found safe in the middle of the night on Thursday. Police are not yet releasing details. (News 12)
- The cost of flood insurance could increase for residents of Merrick and Bellmore. The increases, due to take effect after April 1, will be due to a new method of calculating risk. The new methodology takes into account the costs of rebuilding. (LI Herald)
- The Nassau County legislature and the city of Oysterville are sending Long Island’s largest donation so far to war-torn Ukraine. Over 45,000 pounds of donations have been collected from residents to help refugees meet their basic needs. The shipment — which includes medical items as well as personal hygiene products — will leave for Poland as soon as possible. (LongIsland.com)
- Quay-Sean Renard Hines, of Bay Shore, has been arrested for the second degree murder of Amelia Leguerre, Nassau police said Friday night. Leguerre was shot multiple times in a hospital parking garage. Hines was arraigned in First District Court in Hempstead on Saturday. (Patch)
- The American Legion Post 1282 in Merrick honored the police and fire department in its annual Law and Order day this week. Dignitaries, including New York State Assemblyman Dave McDonough, gathered at the Legion Post headquarters in Merrick to laud the efforts of the first responders. Retired police officer and current Hempstead Councilman, Chris Carini, thanked the honorees and expressed appreciation for their efforts. (LI Herald)

- Looking for ideas to spruce things up at home? Long Island Spring Home Show is open today at the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum, 1255 Hempstead Turnpike in Uniondale. The show will offer interactive displays and many experts to guide you in planning your home upgrade. (10:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M.)
- Freeport is hosting the Freeport Gem and Mineral Show at the Freeport Recreation Center, 130 E. Merrick Rd., today. The show runs from 10:00 A.M. to 4:30 P.M. Dealers will be selling gems, minerals, jewelry, beads and fossils.
- Take a Sunday stroll with the kids, sponsored by the Hempstead Lake State Park Environmental Education and Resiliency Center, 880 Lake Drive in West Hempstead. The walk begins at 10:00 A.M., but organizers ask participants to arrive 10 minutes early. The cost of the walk is $4 per person.
