Merrick Doctor Sexually Abused 70+ Child Patients, Lawsuit Claims
Patients of former doctor Stuart Copperman said he sexually abused them at his Hewlett Avenue home office in Merrick.
MERRICK, NY — More than 70 former patients of a Merrick doctor claimed he sexually abused them over decades, according to a new lawsuit.
The suit was filed Tuesday in state Supreme Court under the 2019 Child's Victims Act, according to attorneys for the 77 accusers.
Copperman worked out of his home office on Hewlett Avenue for decades. The suit claims he sexually abused his first patient, a 13-year-old, in 1961 during his internship and residency. He continued to sexually abuse underage female patients, despite complaints that were reported against him, according to the Saltz Mongeluzzi & Bendesky law firm.

"For nearly 40 years he preyed upon his prepubescent and teenage patients, and now it is time for him to be held accountable for his despicable actions," attorney Robert Mongeluzzi said in a statement.
Copperman lost his medical license in 2001 after at least six young patients testified that he sexually molested them, according to the law firm. Copperman has never been criminally charged.
