Merrick Elementary School Launches Parents as Reading Partners Week
NASA astronaut Nicole Mann spoke to students and answered questions through Skype.
In the Merrick School District, Chatterton Elementary School launched its “Reading Is Out of This World” Parents as Reading Partners Week with the help of U.S. Marine Major and NASA astronaut Nicole Mann.
During the countdown to “PARP liftoff,” Major Mann discussed her interest in space, the training and education needed to become an astronaut and future space missions via Skype.
Following Major Mann’s presentation, students asked questions about her spacesuit, challenging aspects of being an astronaut and her inspiration to become one.

As PARP week continues, students will participate in various activities including author visits, book swaps, BINGO for books and reading 15 to 20 minutes per day with a loved one.
In addition, students who place a “PARP Sighting” graphic in their home window may receive a prize for committing to reading.
