Merrick Kiwanis to Launch New Service Project
Cathy O'Malley had a full agenda at her first meeting as president.
The Merrick Kiwanis Club is continuing to make big plans for the town.
The main service project that the club discussed at it’s meeting on Tuesday is the flag project, which will launch at the Merrick Street Fair.
Kiwanis will be selling flags at the Merrick Street Fair – which will take place on Oct. 22 and Oct. 23 – to honor family and friends who are serving or who have served in the military. Flags will be planted in honor or in memory of a serviceman at the Veteran’s Park on Merrick Avenue from Nov. 1 until Veteran’s Day. A board listing each name will be erected as well, and afterwards will be displayed at the VFW site on Merrick Road.

“We want people to drive by and see it and say ‘oh, that’s nice’,” Arlene Gregory, immediate past president, Merrick Kiwanis, said.
Cards will be sold for a $5 donation at the Kiwanis booth at the fair, but Gregory added that it doesn’t have to stop there.

“We can continue even without the booth to friends and family that we know. I think it will be something nice and hopefully we will make some money. Everything we make will be donated [to veterans],” she explained.
The Kiwanis Club is also gearing up to put out the directory for the new year. Doug Mills, a member of the board and a past president of the group, urged businesses to not only return their forms on time, but to also write as neatly as possible to avoid errors.
In addition, Mills told the group that it was given permission from Roosevelt Field Mall to do the holiday wrapping fundraiser again.
“I have already seen the sample wrapping paper and the order is going in this week,” Mills said.
The next meeting of the Kiwanis Club will be on Oct. 17 at 6:45 p.m. at Borelli’s in East Meadow.
