Merrick Madness Softball Falls to New Jersey, Need to Win Wednesday for Chance at Semis
Merrick's 12-year-old softball team must win Wednesday to keep chances alive for trip to Little League Softball World Series.

The state champion Merrick Madness softball team lost to New Jersey Tuesday afternoon 4-0 in its third game of the Eastern Regional Tournament at Krank Park in Albany.
The loss drops Merrick to 1-2 in the pool tournament, but the 12-year-old girls are not out of it yet.
If the Madness beats Maryland on Wednesday and Pennsylvania wins over Delaware, it will create a three-way tie for second place in the Mid-Atlantic Pool.

If that happens, the team with the lowest run differential through the tournament [runs given up/number of innings played] will advance to the semifinals on Friday, tournament officials said.
New Jersey (4-0) has already clinched first place in the pool.

There are 10 teams in the tournament, broken up into a five-team Mid-Atlantic pool and a five-team New England pool. The top two teams from each pool will square on Friday, with a champion crowded on Saturday. The winner earns a trip to the Little League Softball World Series in Oregon.
The Madness downed Garden City last week in upstate Canastota to win the state title.
