Merrick Readers Celebrate Literacy With Monster Show
Students at the Birch School are taking part in Pick A Reading Partner week, with a "Birch Beavers Are Monster Readers" theme.
MERRICK, NY. — The hard work of Birch School students paid off this week, as the school’s two-week Pick A Reading Partner (PARP) celebration came to a new high with a “Monster Intelligence” puppet show, fitting with the school’s PARP theme, “Birch Beavers Are Monster Readers.”
The puppet show took place during a Wednesday assembly, allowing students to meet Melvin the Monster, a puppet celebrating his birthday who’s trying to earn his license to scream. As for PARP week, the celebration has presented students with prizes as an incentive to keep reading. According to some district employees, it was working.
“The program successfully fostered a love of literacy while bringing families together and inspiring Birch Beavers to read with enthusiasm, imagination, and confidence,” librarian Vanessa Schroeder said.

In an effort to remind students of the importance of reading, learning and perseverance, the assembly gave Birch students the chance to help Melvin study for his big test.
