Merrick School Budget Vote, Trustee Election Tuesday

Here's what you need to know before heading to the polls.

Merrick residents will head to the polls on Tuesday to cast their ballots for a proposed school budget and to elect school board trustees.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Norman J. Levy Lakeside School for those in the Merrick School District and from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Harold D. Fayette School for those in the North Merrick School District.

The Bellmore-Merrick Board of Education is proposing a budget of $147,763,782 for 2016-17. That represents a 3.47 percent spending increase over the current year with a 1.51 percent hike in the school tax levy.

The Merrick Board of Education is proposing a budget of $48,109,405 for 2016-17, which represents a 2.55 spending increase while the North Merrick Board of education is proposing a budget of $30,757,827 for the school year representing a 2.75 percent increase.

Voters will also elect school board trustees on Tuesday.

Incumbents Sigal Negrin and Gina Piskin will both be running unopposed for the two open seats. The terms are for three years.

In North Merrick, incumbent Wendy Gargiulo will be running against challengers Paul Leavin, Jennifer Hyland and Lori Spilabotte are for the seat left open by George Haile, who is not seeking re-election.

In addition, John Pinto and Lissa Zukoff will be running for the seat of Linda Fuller, who is also not seeking re-election.

All three seats are for three year terms.
