Merrick Schools Celebrate Excellence
The Board of Education honored students and staff at a special ceremony.
Recognitions and accolades abounded in the Merrick School District last week as the district’s Board of Education honored the exceptional achievements of students and board members, as well as the retirement resolutions of faculty, during its meeting.
The evening began with awards to honor musical accomplishments. These included 21 students who had performed in the Nassau Music Educators Association’s All-County Festival, six who had performed in the Long Island String Festival Association concerts and 130 who had participated in the New York State School Music Association Solo Evaluation Festival. In addition, for the third consecutive year, the district was recognized as one of the Best Communities for Music Education by the NAMM Foundation.
Each elementary principal bestowed the Board of Education Citizenship Award upon one sixth-grader from their school for embodying the qualities and values associated with the district. This award acknowledges students who demonstrate an appreciation and respect for all, a sense of responsibility toward themselves and others, and an understanding and pride for the school and community. The award recipients were Paige Collazo from Birch School, Gabriella Klimov from Chatterton School and Peter Kourkoumelis from Levy Lakeside School.
