Bracing for the worst as the snow began to fall Tuesday night, all three districts in Merrick closed school and the Merrick Library also took the day off as people hunkered down for what was thought to be bigger than the Dec. 26-27 storm. The unofficial measurement taken by the National Weather Service at 6:25 a.m. Wednesday morning was 9.5 inches, which proved nothing for the town.
