Merrick Train Station Parking Lot is Long Overdue

Since I’m focused on attention to detail, I just noticed that something was long overdue and I wanted to make it look safe for the community. I've noticed something was unsafe after the Historic Blizzard this past winter. Now I wanted to double check the parking lot in one of the busiest commuter parking lot on the side of Sunrise Hwy.

One of the first things I noticed about the Merrick Train Station parking lot was just how long it had been since it received a major resurfacing. The pavement on both the Merrick Avenue and Hewlett Avenue sides showed decades of wear, with cracks, patches, and uneven asphalt reflecting years of heavy commuter use. Looking back at historical imagery and local observations, it appears the lot may not have undergone a full repaving since the mid-1970s, when they added the high-level island platform to eliminate the railroad crossings, making this improvement one of the most significant infrastructure upgrades to the station in generations. While the Merrick spend the first half of the 1970s as crew members renovated the surface of the platform.
One area that deserves particular attention is the Merrick Avenue side of the Merrick Train Station parking lot. While this section may not see the same daily volume of commuters as the Hewlett Ave side, it becomes much busier several times a year during the Merrick Street Fair and other community events.

My biggest concern has always been safety. Over the years, the asphalt has developed numerous cracks and uneven surfaces that could create a tripping hazard for pedestrians. During large events, when hundreds or even thousands of people are walking through the parking lot, it only takes one misplaced step for someone to trip and potentially suffer an injury.
Repaving this section isn’t just about improving the appearance of the station, it’s about making the area safer and more accessible for everyone who uses it. Whether you’re a daily commuter, a family attending the street fair, or someone simply visiting downtown Merrick, a smooth and well-maintained parking lot helps reduce hazards and provides a better experience for the entire community. Also, the white lines in the parking lot has been faded in recent years, which would make it harder for commuters if they can't tell if the white line is no longer visible.

The reason I wanted to bring it up, because the cracks and ashalts has been uneven in recent years as it was time for a change to make this parking lot a safer and make generations of residents to have something great for the community. Not just commuters take the LIRR to work, others take the train to spend time in New York City, Sporting Events and Entertainment Events to make it a day or a night to remember.
