Here are the top five stories in Merrick today:

  1. The College Board offered a local school accolades recently. Mineola High School earned the AP Computer Science Female Diversity Award thanks to a high level of female representation in the classrooms. It was the third year Mineola received this honor. (The Island Now)
  2. Martin Luther King Jr. visited the Lakeview-West Hempstead community twice in 1965, stopping first at the Woodfield Road School. Shortly thereafter, in 1966, the State of New York executed a desegregation order for Malverne. With Black History Month just around the corner, LI Herald's article about King's legacy in the region might be just the thing to read.
  3. There's soon to be a new spot to grab your baguettes in Wantagh. Nicole Valinote reports that the French Workshop Artisan Bakery will open at the Willow Wood Shoppes later this year. (Rutherford Daily Voice)
