More Merrick Castle History Comes to Light
North Merrick firefighter Mark Barone fills us in with some more info on the former home on Horatio Avenue.
In a recent edition of his "Merrick Memories" column, George Capra wrote about the "Merrick Castle," a home on Horatio Avenue that intrigued youngsters more than a half century ago.
Mark Barone, a North Merrick firefighter, saw the column and e-mailed Patch the following:
"That building was burned out in 1973 I believe. The [fire] chief in charge was Walter Ellensohn 1973-1974. He lent me a couple of photos of the house from when the fire occurred that were part of his collection photos from his term as chief. I was told by senior members the house was almost totally made of concrete."
