Nassau County Team Of The Week: Spring Break From Classes, But Not From Sports Action

While there were no classes in Nassau County schools this week, the action didn't stop on fields and diamonds across the county.

NASSAU COUNTY, NY — While most Nassau County schools are on spring break this week, that didn’t put a dent in the action for Section VIII sports. Teams across the spectrum — baseball, flag football, lacrosse and softball — were all in action this week, with some hitting it big and some left wishing they could’ve been at the beach instead.

To find out who were the big winners and losers, read on, in the Nassau County Team of the Week:

Great Neck South has gotten there with stellar pitching and defense, allowing just one run so far this season while scoring 66. In that lone competition where they gave up a run, it wasn’t a particularly close one: GNS beat Roosevelt in that Mar. 28 competition, by a score of 22-1.

Meanwhile, Plainview-Old Bethpage has managed to win games a few different ways. Pitcher’s duel? They’ve done it, beating Mineola 2-1 and Bellmore JFK 4-3. Blowout? They’ve done that too. The Hawks beat Port Washington 13-1 and shut out Division Avenue 5-0.

Two of the three teams are in action this weekend, with Wantagh taking on Syosset Saturday and Great Neck South taking on Malverne the same day.

MacArthur Flag Football Rolls On

Meanwhile in flag football, a special season is unfolding in Levittown.

In seven games, MacArthur High School has only let one team go into double digits: Roosevelt, who scored 12 points in a loss. Otherwise, it has been a run of strong defensive performances propelling MacArthur to its current 7-0 record, which will be tested by Bellmore-Merrick and Roslyn in the coming week.

In other flag football action, Valley Stream shut out Roosevelt 25-0 this week while Plainedge beat Bellmore-Merrick 39-12.

Boys Lacrosse Powerhouses Look Ahead To Thursday Showdown

For Manhasset and Port Washington boys’ lacrosse teams, this coming Thursday’s game is sure to be one that’s circled on the calendar. Both teams sit at 6-0 right now, atop the League 1B standings.

For Manhasset, the season started with a tough test: A triple-overtime, one-goal win against out-of conference opponent Mamaroneck, before racking up wins against Kings Park, Southside, Farmingdale, Shoreham-Wading River and New Jersey foe Rumson-Fair Haven. Manhasset will continue its off-the-island tour with a game against Connecticut’s Darien high school Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, for Port Washington, the run to 6-0 has included wins over Sayville, Half Hollow Hills West, Long Beach, Roslyn, Seaford and Long Island Lutheran.

Statistically, there’s not much separating the two teams: Manhasset scores 12 goals per game on average, Port Washington scores a shade above 10. Manhasset concedes 4.5 goals per game, Port Washington gives up 4.8. With so little separating them on paper, the test is sure to come on the field Thursday.
