Nassau Man Attacked And Robbed Gas Station Attendant: Police

Police say he hit the attendant in the face with a heavy metal tool, then fled on a bicycle.

A Roosevelt man was arrested by Nassau police after he allegedly attacked a gas station attendant and robbed him.

According to police, just after 10 p.m. on Thursday, a 51-year-old gas station attendant had finished pumping gas and making change for Vernon Lowe, 53, of Grenada Avenue, who was sitting in his car. Police say that Lowe then struck the man in the face with a pair of vice grips, which caused him to fall and hit his head on the ground, making him briefly lose consciousness.

Police say that Lowe then took cash from the man's pockets and fled on a bicycle east on Pennywood Avenue. Police responded and began searching the area. Officers found the bicycle on the lawn of a Pennywood Avenue home. Police say that officers saw Lowe exit the home and try to run. After a brief struggle, police were able to arrest him.

The gas station attendant suffered cuts to his head and lips. he was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Lowe was charged with first- and second-degree robbery, second-degree assault, third-degree criminal mischief and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon. He is scheduled to be arraigned on Saturday in First District Court in Hempstead.
