Nassau Man Pushes Baby Into Street To Flee From Arrest, Detective Hurt: Police

BREAKING: Detectives were trying to arrest him for selling drugs when he ran, pushing a baby in a stroller into the street, police say.

A Roosevelt man pushed a baby in a stroller into the street in an attempt to flee from officers who were trying to arrest him for selling drugs, Nassau Police said.

According to police, Hempstead Police detectives were conducting a narcotics investigation on Terrace Avenue Wednesday at 12:58 p.m. when plainclothes detectives saw Patrick Kemp, 31, of E. Greenwich Avenue, make a drug sale while pushing a stroller with a baby in it. When the detectives attempted to arrest him, police said Kemp pushed the stroller into the street and fled on foot.

After a short chase, Kemp was arrested after violently resisting, police said. A detective was transported to a local hospital for treatment of cuts and abrasions his hands and face, as well as an injury to his right wrist. A loaded .45 caliber Springfield semi-automatic handgun was found in Kemp's jacket pocket after his arrest, police said. The baby was not injured and was released to the mother.

Kemp charged with two counts third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, second- and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, second-degree assault, resisting arrest and endangering the welfare of a child. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday at First District Court in Hempstead.
