Nassau Police Save Suicidal Man From Jumping Off Overpass

Police say the officers climbed onto a highway overpass to secure the man and stop him from jumping.

Nassau County police officers saved the life of a young man who was threatening to kill himself by jumping off an overpass onto the Meadowbrook Parkway in Uniondale Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, a call came in just after 4 p.m. for a man who had climbed over the fence on the Meadowbrook Parkway overpass on Jerusalem Avenue and was threatening to jump. Officers Quizhpi, Barry and Schuerlein arrived and climbed the fence, too, while talking to the 22-year-old man. They managed to stop him from falling or jumping.

Additional officers arrived on the scene. Sergeants Healy and Price, and Officer Sovaras, were able to remove the chain link fence in the area, and officers were able to safely get the man off the overpass and back to safety. He was then taken to a hospital for evaluation.
