Here are the top five stories today in Merrick:
- Wednesday was Groundhog Day, but whether the rodent saw its shadow depends on who you ask. Timothy Bolger reports that Holtsville Hal did not see his shadow; Malverne Mel did indeed. Learn about their dispute at the Long Island Press.
- Keep tabs on the pandemic with a look at the latest reported hospital capacity in the Merrick area. Statewide, approximately 80% of inpatient beds are occupied; COVID-19 patients occupy about 17% of total beds. Closer to home, those numbers look more like 75% and 23% respectively. (Merrick Patch)
- The Nassau County Police Department’s Homicide Squad issued an alert for a Long Island homicide suspect earlier this week. Santos Valeriano Argueta was shot and killed shortly before 11:00 PM on Sunday, January 30, in Hempstead. Investigators are offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest of the person who shot Argueta. (Rutherford Daily Voice)
