Here are the top five stories today in Merrick:
- A Hempstead man has been convicted of a violent assault and robbery of his female housemate as of Tuesday, April 12. Johnny Shorter, 42, was convicted of crimes that include breaking into the locked bedroom of a sleeping roommate, holding her at gunpoint and pistol-whipping the woman back in October 2020. He faces a possible sentence of up to 125 years in prison. (Daily Voice)
- Police say a man crashed into their vehicle and an emergency service truck while being pursued from Garden City to Mineola on Monday, April 11. Robert Reaves, of Queens, and his passenger are also in hot water for resisting arrest once Reaves was forced to stop his car. (Daily Voice)
- Police released a video regarding the ten sets of remains found in Gilgo Beach — murders that have gone unsolved since 2011. The footage shows one of the victims, Megan Waterman, leaving a Holiday Inn in Hauppauge back in October 2010. Police believe Waterman was on her way to meet the murderer in this video. (NBC New York)
- Accolades go out to the Garden City High School Jazz Ensemble, who received praise for "one of the best performances they have heard at the festival in years [...] near flawless execution" at a recent festival. It was the group's first performance since before the 2020 onset of the pandemic. The Garden City High School Jazz Ensemble's next performance is scheduled for May 17. (Patch)
