Here are the top five stories today in Merrick:

  1. A woman was shot in the chest in New Cassel on Saturday, April 9. Police say that Brian Mercado-Ventura, 21, attacked a 19-year-old individual. The victim survived the attack and subsequent surgery to remove a bullet near her heart. Authorities are calling it the latest in a string of domestic violence incidents in the area. (News 12 Brooklyn)
  2. An East Meadow man has been charged with driving drunk while his two young daughters were in the vehicle, police say. Dave Edwards, 35, crashed into a car stopped at a traffic light on Sunday, April 10. No injuries were reported. (Daily Voice)
  3. A "zombie house" is no more, thanks to neighbor complaints in Massapequa. Oyster Bay's Quality of Life Task Force stepped in to execute the court-granted for demolition of the structure on Alhambra Road. The Task Force has demolished more than two dozen similar buildings since its inception. (LongIsland.com)
  4. Get ready for the Jones Beach Air Show, coming up on May 28 and 29. The United States Navy Blue Angels will serve as headliners with many other performances as well. The event is free, although parking costs $10. Additionally, those-in-the-know say to arrive earlier than the 10 a.m. start time if you're planning on parking, because the lot fills quickly.   5. Long Island public schools are set to get more than $457 million in extra state financial aid in 2022-23, which is the largest amount the agencies have ever received. The boon means that Nassau County's state assistance will increase by 6.52%, or $222.25 million. (Newsday, subscription required)
