Here are the top three stories in Merrick today:

  1. Nassau County has extended its property tax grievance filing deadline to May 2, 2022. Merrick homeowners who believe the County's Tentative Assessed Value issued in January 2022 is too high compared to similar properties in their neighborhood may file an Application for Correction of Assessment with the Assessment Review Commission (ARC) by the new deadline. This assessment will serve as the basis of 2023/2024 school taxes and 2024 general taxes for Nassau County residents. (LongIsland.com)
  2. A local priest is currently under investigation for child pornography, according to the Nassau County District Attorney's office. Joseph Nohs was the pastor of St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church in Levittown, just a few miles outside of Merrick's city limits. Although the Diocese of Rockville Centre says it is not aware of any other sexual misconduct accusationsagainst Nohs, he will not be allowed to present himself as a priest while the investigation is ongoing.
